Boots UK (formerly Boots the Chemists Ltd), operating as Boots, is a retail chemist network in the UK, Ireland, Norway, Thailand and other countries. In 2006, the mother company, The Boots Co. plc, amalgamated with Alliance UniChem to become Alliance Boots. In 2007, Alliance Boots was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Stefano Pessina, privatising the business and relocating its head office to Switzerland, the first FTSE 100 to be acquired by a privately held investment group.
Walgreens acquired a 45% interest in Alliance Boots in 2012, with the possibility to purchase the remainder within three years. The exercise of this warrant took place in 2014 and Boots became a wholly owned affiliate of the new Walgreens Boots Alliance on December 31, 2014. It has over 2,500 stores in the UK and Ireland, from small retail stores to major healthcare and cosmetics stores.
Boots also has a retailer website and a customer cards program known as Boots Advance card. Boots was founded in 1849 by John Boot. in 1883 and became Boots Pure Drug Co. Ltd. in 1888. Jesse Boot sells the business to the United Drug Corporation in 1920. 7 ] However, due to the worsening North American economy, Boots was resold into UK ownership in 1933.
The grandchild of the founders, John Boot, who passed on the Baron Trent name from his fathers, ran the business. 8 ] The name of Boots Pure Drug Companies was renamed The Boots Companies Ltd in 1971. From 1898 to 1966, many Boots stores established a loan book known as Boots Book-Lovers' Library.
In the sixties, with the invention of the analgesic Ibuprofen by John Nicholson and Stewart Adams, Boots entered the research and production of medicines. In 1987 the enterprise was honoured with the Queen's Award for Technical Achievement. An important research area of Boots in the 1980s was the medication for the treatment of cardiac insufficiency Manoplax.
9 ] Manoplax's 1993 exit from the Manoplax markets for security reasons put great investor pressures, and in 1994 Boots sold its no longer sustainable ethical pharmaceuticals business to the company. 12 ] The 2006 sales of Boots Healthcare International contained everything manufactured by Crookes Healthcare, located in Nottingham.
Boots Opticians Ltd was established in 1987 with the acquisitions of Clement Clarke Ltd and Curry and Paxton Ltd. The Opticians became the second biggest opticians group in the UK. Boots Opticians purchased Dollond & Aitchison, an opticians franchise established in 1750, in 2009. Walgreens, the biggest pharmacy group in the United States, will acquire a 45% interest in Alliance Boots for $6.7 billion on 19 June 2012.
It is intended to be a long-term strategy to promote both Boots and Boots more in the US and Walgreens more in the UK and China through Boots' activities in this area. 26 ] Walgreens on August 6, 2014 affirmed that it would acquire the other 55% and join Alliance Boots to become a new holdings entity, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.
27 ] Walgreens and Boots will become subsidiary companies of the new entity as of December 31, 2014. Boots Estate near the town of Nottingham in Beeston has a number of protected historical monuments. Known as the D90, the Grade II* commercial property was constructed in 1966-68 to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill design.
56 ] The staff have a local café, cafés, snack bars, a newspaper shop, a Boots the Chemist store, an optician's shop and an ATM. While the boot museum is now locked, historic objects are stored or displayed in the D90 entrance area. High Jumping ^ Boots UK Limited.
