Horse responses to three frequent airway viral infections were investigated by measurement of tracheal mucciliary clearance rate in the windpipe. TCR was performed before, during, and after disease and convalescence in equidae subjected to equine Rhinovirus (ERhV-2), Equine Fluenza Virus (EIV), and Equine Herpesvirus ( EHV-4) by means of transverse scintigraphy after injecting technetium 99m sulfide colloid into the upper part of the tracheoal hem.

Six equidae subjected to ERhV-2 had TCR within acceptable range. EIV exposures led to a reduction in TCR in six out of seven equidae, with TCR staying below the 95% trust threshold of standard levels for each equine for up to 32 consecutive day despite resolving clinically relevant symptoms. Temporary changes were seen in six EHV-4 subject equines, but significant decreases in TCR were seen in three of them.

TCR was a useful, minimal invasive method that showed that airway virus can cause permanent changes in TCR although there are no clinically apparent symptoms.

Distance between corticosteroids after joint injections

Aim is to set up standardized tests in the pharmaceutical test laboratories and to define standardized threshold values and regulations for the detoxification period. Heather Knych, DVM, PhD, DACVCP, Associate Professor at the University of California's School of Veterinary Medicine, at the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Congress in Salt Lake City, Utah, December 6-10, 2014, debated experiential evidence used to determine threshold values and detoxification periods.

Recent ARCI (Association of Racing Commissioners International) advised that intraarticular (IA) corticosteroid withdrawals should be seven day for Triamcinolononeacetonid ( TA ), beta-methasone and isofupredone, and 21 day for methylprednisoloneacetate. At 100 mg in a specimen, prednisolone methyl acid is given to a solitary ankle. In one trial, methyl prednisolone reacetate is 7-10 mg less in the body than the limit of detectability, but in some cases it can stay in the Synovial Liquid for up to 70 mg.

A further trial gave 100 mg meth (prednisolone) octate in two articulations. After a washing phase, three hinges were treated with 200 mg methacrylate prednisolone acid. Within 5-7 working day after dosing, Methylprednisolone dropped below the suggested therapeutic limit in several hinges. Isofupredon, which is given at a dosage of 8 mg in a discrete articular system, rapidly drops below the limit of detectability in plasmatic samples within 1-2 day, while synovial levels in the articular system have been found for up to 14-day.

Knych's recent trial was designed to evaluate the feasibility of the application of recent corticosteroid regulation advice on the basis of equine clinician protocol. It evaluated dosages of correticosteroids not previously investigated, dosing of more than one corticosteroid, dosing into more than one ankle, and combination of correticosteroids with other ankle therapies.

Results were encouraged for dosage protocol studies in the light of ARCI's recent guidance: Methylprednisolone, which was given in a 40-600 mg dosage band in 1-4 hinges, dropped 21 day below the regulation level. 3 On day 7, trialcinolone, which was given in a dosage of 9-18 mg in 1-2 hinges, dropped below the therapeutic limit.

  • Isoflupredone administered in a 10-18 mg dosage band in 2-3 hinges was below the regulation level by date 7. Beta-methasone, which was administered in a dosage of 12-60 mg in two different joint areas, resulted in seven equines dropping below the legal limit on the 7th and three on the 10th date.

Using hypaluronic acids, all correticosteroids fall below their relevant regulative limits by the prescribed detoxification period. The values for trialamcinolone decreased below the regulative level until day 7, while the values for beta -methasone decreased below the regulative level until day 7 and the others until day 10. Provisional results from an extra 90 Quarter Horse trial using clinically protocol further support ARCI's suggested detoxification periods.

Knych concludes that eliminating corticosteroids differs according to the dosage used and the number of joint treatments.
