Hard Feed for Horses

Rigid feed for horses

Feeding horses Free access to grass and hay. When you can, give your horse free access to grass. The food is successful in getting the most out of a food-based diet and supporting healthy digestion. Limit your horse's access to the pasture to the very early morning hours until a few hours after sunrise. Forage low-sugar hay and avoid hay from grazing grass or cereals such as oats, barley or wheat.

oatmeal

As an alternative, the single components can be bought and if necessary feed. Oat is an energy-rich (or "warming") feed, and large amounts of oat can lead to excess in some horses. Before you feed barley, it should be cooked or steeped for at least 2 hrs, as it will swell when moist so that it does not even swell in the horses belly. This can lead to trouble.

Corn is a high-energy feed and can cause upset. It' useful for feeding a horseman, but should not be used on horses that move hard because it remains in the belly for a long while. The chaff is fine chopped grass and is used to block a horse's feed to avoid the feed being swallowed too quickly.

Mollichop is a blend of wheat and treacle that is used to enhance the meal volume and the treacle makes it more appetizing. Sugarbeet is a low-sugar, slow-releasing source of unheated and high in calories and fibres. Sugarbeet should be steeped in night soak ( 1 liter of pure drinking and 200 grams of sugared beet), as it will swell before use.
