An equestrian women's hat (really), around 1780
Here (and here and here) we talked about how the ladies of the eighteenth century wear riding clothes. A lot of English ladies were experienced riders, and even when they weren't, they thought they could attract the role. No. The eighteenth century woman topped her riding clothes as she would with any gown for the day: a feather foam.
Irrespective of the colour of custom, the most beloved hats were mono-chrome with plumes, coquards, ribbons and knobs also in colourless. From the Margaret Hunter Milliner's store in Colonial Williamsburg, this copy, on the lefthand side, is characteristic of the last part of the eighteenth century and awakens to the breathtaking realities of altitude and abundance.
You can only guess what the horse must have thought to make such a sweet - and how many ribbon and needles were needed to keep it in place.
