Because of their proportion, nature and height, the term "horses" is always used to describe them. A legend of the minature horses is that they are a review of Eohippus of the Eocene era, which were only 10 to 20 inch high. A further legend was that these small horses were beached in a gorge, where they were cut down to their present sizes with brief supplies for years.

The current documentary of the minature animal dates from the Renaissance of the fourteenth and sixteenth century. During the 1850s in France, the Empress of Napoleon III had a small coach drawn by a small animal. The Egyptians also found small horses in graves with the Pharaohs.
