Training for a three-year-old steed
You will find hints and information on the training of a three-year-old stallion in this section. It' very important that the young rider should be able to act calm and gentle in his relationships with others. They should also establish appropriate etiquette and be taught to observe the codes of conduct we human beings have established.
They have to know how to handle our'human world', so they have to put on a holster, let themselves be touch by a person and get used to'strange' things like flying spray, automobiles, umbrellas, cables, linen and other'human' things. We can use fundamental work, body work, pressure & obstruction training and trailers training to help a youngster work together with us in our "human" state.
First of all, the young person should be taught to carry a holster, to be guided by the holster and to stay at the holster. You can use the techniques of "pressure and relaxation" in conjunction with "positive reinforcement" to train a rider to be guided. By guiding the stallion by the holster, you can show your lead and direction in a kind way.
Horses must be able to be touch everywhere. It is important in an emergency when a vet needs to check the animal. In addition, the horses should be taught to raise their legs softly and to remain patient during care. We often use cords, leashes, reins as well as lashes in our training.
This means that the horses must get used to the contact so that they do not get panicky if the end of a cable unintentionally contacts one of their buttocks. Even the lash can look weird to the mare at first, so let her know it's just an elongation of her arms and your temper.
As soon as the rider has experienced the lash as an expansion of you and your own bodies, he can begin the process of "conditioning", and as soon as he has understood the lash, he will begin to fulfill your wishes. Naturally the rider should be happy with the lash.
You should never use the lash to fix or "punish" a stallion, and you can find out more about it here: A young stallion must be taught to enjoy caring for himself. We recommend that you get your horses used to the wash place, the insect repellent and other things you will need to take good charge of the horses.
We recommend that you get your horses used to many "scary" things such as umbrellas, handcarts, machinery, traffic and other things.
